We decided to discover the city of Torrevieja, which is a seaside city in the province of Alicante. I googled the city to find out what we could do there, and from the pictures I thought it would be a good place to visit for the day, so we got into our van and made our way to Torrevieja. When we got there, Google had taken us to, I think was, the central part of Torrevieja, for it didn’t look anything like the photos we saw online. The area that we were in was more of a residential area, which to me, was a nice area, but not one of the cleanest I’ve seen in my travels throughout Spain. I felt comfortable being there with the kids, however, the photos that Google showed did not represent where we were trying to go, which was the seaside, the beach and various historic monuments. I’m pretty sure these places are somewhere in the city, but on this journey Google decided to take us somewhere else.
I’m not mad at Google because when we got to our destination and realised there was really nothing in the place we were at, I quickly got into my ‘think fast mom mode’ and Googled what we could do in the vicinity of the area we were in. Google suggested a park that was literally 4 minutes from us, so we followed the directions to a park called, Parque de las Naciones which means in English Park of Nations.
Upon arrival, we had to circle around the vicinity of the park because there was no parking due to it being a busy area. We parked just up the street near the roundabout where there was a lot more parking on the main road. Parking was free and also free around the park. We only walked about a block to the entrance of the park that led us into a beautiful scenic pathway of trees on a gravel paved walkway filled with various types of birds walking amongst us. We got close to ducks, roosters, peacocks and the most annoying of them all, pigeons. The pigeons drove me nuts for they were pooping everywhere. We saw people feeding the birds, which I thought was a big mistake because the pigeons would fly very close to our heads to get to the food, and to me, pigeons are like rats with wings….disgusting! My family and I were trying our best to not get plopped on, but unfortunately we became a victim of pigeon poop that unbeknownst to us, later in our journey of the park, our pram and change bag got pooped on.
As we kept walking through the park we got to see a beautiful pond that displayed all the country flags of Europe. From an aerial view, this pond is designed in the shape of Europe. How cool is that?! Near the end of our journey, the path led us to a kids playground where we allowed the kids to be free and have fun. There were three sections of playgrounds next to each other that had swings, spring riders, teeter totters and other climbing apparatus, but the highlight of the playground that my kids and every other kid that was there enjoyed, was the gigantic and colourful statue of a dragon in the form of a slide. To get to the top of the slide there is a secret entrance of steps inside the dragon that leads kids all the way up and then down the slide. There was not one kid who did not want to go up and down that slide as parents watched from the bottom waiting for their kids to come down in laughter and excitement.

We spent about an hour at the park before heading off and trying to find a bite to eat for lunch. As we made it to the entrance of the park by the roundabout, we noticed a grocery store, called, ’24 Horas’ that was open, because on Sundays in Spain almost everything is closed. So, we decided to go check it out, and I’m so glad we did. On the right side of the tiny grocery store were staple grocery products and on the left hand side was a cafe that served hot and cold drinks along with delicious mouth-watering pastries. I bought a couple of empanadas, donuts, cinnamon rolls and mini pizzas for the family which we devoured quickly. I went back in to buy an additional cinnamon roll because they were so good. If you get a chance to visit 24 Horas, I highly recommend the ‘empanadas’….de-lic-ious!
It was a good day for us and we really enjoyed ourselves at Parque de las Naciones.
